Born in 1848 in Santiago de Las Vegas, Cuba, the Byron cigar legacy began when cousins Jose and Eusebio Alfonso established a small factory and named their creation after the celebrated English poet Lord Byron—himself a devoted cigar aficionado. This prestigious line, which some historians credit as the first to feature a lithographed band bearing its name, disappeared during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The storied brand remained dormant until 1998, when Nelson Alfonso, the great-great-great grandson of the original founders, revived his family's heritage after 150 years, bringing the exquisite Ecuadorian-wrapped Petit Poemas to a new generation of medium-bodied cigar enthusiasts.
